Former Blue Peter presenter John Leslie ‘groped a woman’s breasts with both hands’ at a celebrity Christmas party, a court said today.
The alleged sexual assault allegedly took place when the former TV and radio star was at a party at a nightclub in London’s West End in 2008, jurors have learned.
Leslie, 55, real name John Leslie Stott, denies an allegation of non-consensual sexual assault and is on trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
On the day the trial opened today, jurors learned that the alleged victim approached Leslie at a celebrity Christmas party at a bar – then called the Soho Revue Bar, in Greek Street – on December 5 2008.
She alleged that “without saying anything” Leslie “grabbed both breasts”.
The woman, who came out in 2017 in response to the #MeToo movement, alleged that Leslie then “ laughed again and left, ” the court said.
Former Blue Peter presenter John Leslie (pictured left in a hat) arrived today for the first day of his sexual assault trial after claiming to groped a woman at a party 12 years ago .
Jocelyn Ledward, prosecutor, said: ‘This case concerns an allegation of sexual assault.
In 2008, the defendant attended a party at a nightclub in London.
Soon after, he grabbed a young woman’s breasts, quite deliberately for a few seconds before walking away.
‘The young woman was stunned, shocked and told people about the incident at the time. ”
She added: ‘The Christmas party was held in Greek Street, Soho. [The woman] was present.
“ A man she recognized as John Leslie went to the bar. She introduced herself. She squeezed his hand and explained who she was.
‘Without saying anything, he grabbed both of her breasts with both hands, laughed again and walked away as he did.
It lasted about three seconds according to his estimate. This is clearly not accidental touching, but deliberate sexual assault.
She added: ‘He knew no one was going to challenge him. ”
The prosecutor said the alleged victim spoke to people she knew at the time.
But she said the woman only came forward and spoke to police after reading other experiences in the #MeToo movement – which was widely publicized in 2017 in light of the allegations against the American film producer Harvey Weinstein.
The 55-year-old former TV and radio presenter was seen arriving at Southwark Crown Court in London this morning wearing a green tartan mask emblazoned with ‘Scotland’ and a thistle on one side.
Ms Ledward said: ‘In recent years, other victims of sexual assault by prominent names have come forward as part of the MeToo movement.
‘She started to feel more angry with what she had been through and decided to speak to the police.
In March 2018, he volunteered to participate in an interview with the police. He chose not to have a lawyer and did not respond to any comments on every question.
“He just said, ‘I never assaulted anyone.’
Leslie, from Edinburgh, wore a gray checked three-piece suit, a blue shirt with a navy tie, and a large bottle of sparkling water.
Her father, Les Stott, listened in the courtyard, where everyone involved in the hearing was socially left behind.
The trial continues.
Leslie featured Blue Peter between 1989 and 1994, and also hosted Wheel Of Fortune and This Morning.
He was also the studio host of the first series of the UK version of Survivor, which aired on ITV in 2001.
